Report: Israel sought to strike Iran during riots
8 August 2009 Posted By Patrick Disney
YNet cites a Kuwaiti paper:
Israel last month asked the United State for permission to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, Kuwaiti newspaper al-Jarida reported on Friday.
The paper quoted a “US diplomatic source located in Jerusalem”, but the report’s credibility was not confirmed.
According to the sources, after the opposition riots broke out in Iran following June’s presidential election results, Israel asked the US government for a green light to strike the country’s nuclear facilities, along with other vital facilities in Iran. The source added that the Obama administration ignored the Israeli request, that was sent by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with President Shimon Peres’s signature as well.
According to the source, Israel was serious about its intentions to attack Iran and hit it hard, but the US’s lack of response to the request left Israel frustrated and the operation was called off. The source also said explained White House’s decision to withdraw its recognition of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s re-election, saying, “We were under Israel and Arab pressure to take back our recognition of him. “There are moderate Arab countries that do not want us to recognize Ahmadinejad.”
There were reports Israel sought a green light to bomb Iran during the Bush administration. However, this provocative report appears to be thinly sourced.

I don’t know why this is considered post-worthy on this blog. A google search for ‘israel attack iran site:ynetnews.com’ returns a good number of posts. Here is one titled “Is Israel planning Iran strike?” from October of 2005 quoting a Saudi news paper.
Right-wing hardliners have had a great relationship keeping each other in power in Israel and in Iran. Ultra right wing clerics use Israeli threats of war as an excuse to silence moderate voices in Iran. Israelis rally around their ultra right-wing madman to protect them against the madman clerics of Iran.
Ahmadinejad and Netanyahu needs each other in an antagonistic symbiosis.
The difference is that Israel has the power to bomb Iran, is crazy enough to think it’s a good idea, and has carried out numerous similarly crazy — and homicidal– actions in the past.
As for the contention that Ahmadinejad & Netanyahu have a symbiotic relationship, the fact that Israel started gunning for Iran in 1995, 10 years before Ahmadi appeared on the scene, suggests that Ahmadi is merely Israel’s useful idiot du jour
